We wrapped up our unit on How We Express Ourselves this week. I was impressed with the big understandings that students came away with after this unit. This is what students had to say -
There are many perspectives during times of war.
War is about resources, misunderstandings, & greed.
War is the highest level of disagreement!
War is hard on soldiers and citizens of countries.
People learn about war through the perspective of their country.
Men and women who serve in the military are brave, committed, risk takers and communicators, they are also reflective about their experiences.
We are more knowledgeable about different wars and we are empathetic. We still wonder why war becomes the only option in some cases.
War is a heart breaker.
After reflecting on the unit we were motivated to take action. Our class has decided to support our troops by writing Christmas Cards expressing appreciation and donating power bars and novels. Please send in power bars, paperback novels and cards by Friday, November 22nd. Thank you Charlotte for taking action and making a very creative flyer for the Friday Envelopes.

New Unit
How the World Works
"Oh Dear, What Can the Matter Be?"
Central Idea- The physical properties of matter determine its state and its uses.
Lines of Inquiry-
The structure and properties of matter
How materials combine to form mixtures and solutions
The reactions that can occur when materials combine
This is a hands on exciting unit! This week we had a blast exploring the properties and states of ooblek and determining the cause of our soda and mentos explosion!
Students are learning the skill of note taking during this unit.
The Unit of Inquiry Journal and student notes are formative assessments throughout the course of the unit.
Check your child's journal to see their notes.
Students will get to experience how matter works in the kitchen by making; butter, ice cream, popcorn and other edible treats. We will learn the importance of understanding matter in creating food.
The summative assessment for this unit is for students to choose a recipe at home, follow the recipe and explain the science behind the recipe. Students will bring in the recipe along with their scientific explanation and the edible product to share with their classmates.
A Scientific Cookbook will be created out of all of the recipes.
